I didn’t stop at the code.

I published YouCook on the App Store and Google Play, designed the store screenshots below, built youcookapp.com in Next.js and ran the Meta ads myself.

Under the hood

The recipe behind
the recipes

I made every call: what to build, which AI handles which job, how to charge for it and how to sell it.

Serves
iOS + Android
Chef
Me, start to finish
Cooked
2024 – 2025

Ingredients

  • 1 Flutter codebase for iOS and Android
  • Firebase for sign-in, data and storage
  • Cloud Functions so every AI call runs on the server
  • OpenAI vision to read the photo of your fridge
  • Whisper to turn a voice note into a list
  • Groq + OpenAI models to write recipes, steps and lists
  • An image model to picture each new dish
  • RevenueCat for subscriptions, a pinch
  • Next.js for youcookapp.com

Method

  1. 1 Make input effortless. A photo, a voice note or a few typed words. Nobody wants to type out their whole fridge.
  2. 2 One model per job. Each task goes to the model that does it fast and cheap, instead of one big model for everything.
  3. 3 Watch the costs. Every AI call runs in a Cloud Function that checks who’s asking and logs the tokens it used, so I could see what each recipe cost.
  4. 4 One codebase, two stores. Flutter let me ship to the App Store and Google Play from the same code.
  5. 5 Sell it myself. The website, the store screenshots and the Meta ads were mine too.

What I learned

Downloads are cheap.
Paying is the real test.

I’d rather learn this on my own product than on a client’s budget.

Note to self

Getting downloads was cheap: about £0.60 each on Meta ads.

Getting people to pay was much harder.

Validate the moment someone pays before building everything around it.

That lesson shapes how I scope every client product now.
